How to test Hitachi UltraStar 600gb

I recently purchased a Hitachi Ultrastar 600gb off ebay.
My freind says I need a SAS controller to use it. All I want to do is boot it up to see if it's DOA or not.
But there are many different SAS controllers at many different prices.
Could anyone show me which one I need?
