hp psc 2110 & cartridge problem

I've attempted to replace my HP 57 ink cartridge as I've done many times before . I'm now getting 'Remove and check cartridge' msg. I've tried several times and all looks OK. I've tried to reuse the old cartridge and have just tried a replacement one. Same msg. is coming out. Any suggestions? Is my printer 'gone'?

It's possible that the contacts are dirty and need cleaning with a little isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip.
