I cant resolve my 0mb free space!!

Hi, i have windows 98 and i have the following problems:

0mb free space on hard drive (the windows drive)

tried disk cleanup, stil 0mb free space

deleted many large files, still 0mb free space

used the add/remove programs utility, still 0mb free space


i also tried all of the above on all of the accounts on my comp, including the adminstrator account but i still had 0mb free space.

i would try disk defragmenting but it says i need 15% free space to do it..

HELP!!!

Windows makes heavy usage of something called a swap file. Basically, it substitutes some of your HDD space for system RAM, whether you have a lot of RAM or not. The swap size is variable, and will grow larger at times. As a result, you could be contending with your swap file for free space. You should have at least few hundred megs free on a Windows system at all times to allow for swap space, or you will have severe stability problems as a result, not to mention the fact that you won't be able to save files or settings if you have zero free space. How big is your HDD?

Not to alarm you, but your free space may also be used for nafarious purposes by malicious individuals if your PC has been compromised. If you have an internet-connected Windows PC without an active firewall and antivirus, you are invariably already compromised. In that case, a reformat and reinstall would be the only viable option. My hard drive is 50gb. I tried running my virus scanner but i have 0mb free space and you cant run the virus scanner on 0mb free space :(

Is there any other way i can free up hard drive space withought reformatting or reinstalling? because i have lots of important files on my computer and i cant lose them.

Try running scandisk, this is a known bug with Fat32 and Explorer. Running scandisk should fix the problem though.
 
thanks do i do standard or thorough scandisk? or shall i just switch the computer off not properly so that scan disk runs on the blue screen before windows starts?

Shouldn't matter. Scandisk just needs to verify free space then it should be back to normal.
 
Even after you've rebuilt your file allocation table using scandisk, you will still likely have storage space issues. It sounds to me like you need may to add another HDD to the mix. In addition, please consider reinstalling your OS onto your new HDD, using the old HDD as an archive of your old files. If indeed you have been connected to the internet without the necessary 3rd party security tools, you're likely to be the unfortunate owner of a rooted system. In other words, your computer resources may already be employed to attack others on the internet, send junk mail, and worse... :(

i tried doin start/run/scandisk, but nothing came up. I also tried finding scandisk in accesories/system tools, but it wasn't there :s

any help would be much appreciated

should be able to get to it going Start > Run and type scandskw.exe

If you want to run it in dos the command is scandisk.exe
