Well, after trying to get my old SpeedTouch 330 working in Mandriva 2006 for quiet some time, I decided on the purchase of this router/modem (which arrived this afternoon) ebuyer.com - Networking » Wired » ADSL Modem Routers » Product details I installed the router/modem in XP with the aid of the setup CD that came with it via a web interface. It worked instantly in XP, no problems! Right, I thought, over into Mandriva to try to set it up there. Well, surprise, surprise - the connection had obviously been automatically configured! I just clicked on Firefox, and into HWFs, and that was it - here I am writing this note (my first via Linux). My thanks to all that helped me get an Internet connection with various advice, and special thanks to Addis for recommending the above-mentioned router/modem - it really was the ultimate answer to my connection problems. Well, that's enough excitement for one day. Tomorrow, I shall try to install some programs via urpmi - that should be fun! Actually, a surprising amount of useful stuff was on the Mandriva installation CD – certainly enough to get me started in Linux. Cheers, Dave.
Write down what you did! Theres nothing worse than having to relearn stuff wityh Linux. Ive got notes everywhere!
I will take notes, that's for sure, but really, what to do and how to setup is explained via the setup booklet & the installation CD that walks you through setting up the router/modem via Windows. The instructions also said there were instructions on the CD for setting-up in Linux - but as I said - when I booted over into Mandriva - the connection was already up! So, basically, all I really had to do to get the router/modem working in Mandriva, was to set it up in Windows. Weird, but good!
w00t. Its great when you having a working internet connection in linux. A router option is the easiest and will work 99.99% of the time with no flaws. Its usually the network card drivers that cause trouble. Have fun with urpmi, if you have a good internet connection its great watching your whole system be updated.
told yer here but well done anyway, give yourself a pat on the back, and have a pint to celebrate  :simpson:
Oh btw david, You didn't have to go into Windows to set up your router. Its very likely that the router would need no configuration at all. If it did, then it would be done from Linux. (just point web browser to router's IP address and set up).
Thanks, Addis. Well, setting up a router seems so much easier than trying to get that old SpeedTouch 330 working! Cheers, Dave
Yes, you were right, Dave. I've just finished setting-up my repositories and have downloaded some suggested packages from AT's 'Getting The Most From Mandriva Guide' - which is on HWFs. Sorry, I have not got the link handy if you have not read it already, but it should be easy to find on here. A very useful guide, I must say. Dave
