    My budget is around $1,000...

I have a desktop, but I would like to replace my MacBook Pro with a gaming-capable laptop.

The games I have in mind include, but are not limited to:

    - Oblivion
    - Fallout 3
    - Half Life 2

I would really appreciate any advice you can give me, thanks!

i'd look here iBUYPOWER: High Performance Custom Gaming Computers and Notebooks and here CyberPower Inc. - UNLEASH THE POWER - Create the Custom Gaming PC and Laptop Computer of your dreams. for games, the video card is the big issue. a gtm 240 or ati radeon 4650 Mobile should do what you want (there are a lot better cards, but those should give ok appearance and speed). ram is another biggy, 4GB is a good number, 3 is minimum. CPU is the third main part, and where your gonna find your big cost. dual core 2.2 will do (mine has dual core 1.6 and with an Nvida 7250m i get decent speed) higher speed gives better performance, but can become really expensive.
note on the video, Nvida went from the geforce 9000 to GTx 200 series, ATI equivalent is radeon 3000 and radeon 4000 series. my Nvida 7250m is ancient.
