New to ripping dvds (so new we are waiting for the dvdrw to be delivered)
We've downloaded a few films & some will play on the pc, some wont saying something about decoding etc. I remember from cd burning that some formats may need converting so was looking for a video converting program. Thought it'd be easy but so far no luck. The ones i have found only convert to one format, or convert from one format etc. Can ne1 recommend a good free one? (unless the unit actually comes with its own conversion software (dell)
p.s. what format does it need to be in to burn/rip anyway?

Well if you are trying to watch them on your pc you shouldnt need converting programs but will nedd something called 'codec', some good codecs are DivX and XVid and they should play most movie formats! I dont remember any free converters off the top of my head but i will look or you can on google!
BTW-i hope you didnt illegally download those movies.

edit: a good free encoder is TMPG Encoder is the name i think but i dont remember where i got it!

p.s. which download sites are actually legal? alot of them say they are, when i bet they're not

well alot of sites have a policy or certificate that is viewable to tell you if its legit but no, limewire is not legal!

I dont know of any sites to download movies from as i dont download movies!

EDIT: i removed possibly illegal topics so i dont get banned!

This is bordering on illegal topics. But i think limewire is legal, more of how you use it.

No Limewire and all p2p programs are perfectly legal (as of now at least) and downloading on them is legal. its only when you download something that is Copyrighted (which is what people use it for, but to be technical it is legal).
