Hi I have just bought a new MSI K9N Neo V2 motherboard. I plugged in my IDE hard drive and CD ROM/DVD drive. When I try to select boot order, it only recognises the CD ROM/DVD drive not the hard drive. If I only have the hard drive connect, it recognises it straight away.

Any ideas, why it will not recognise both together on the same cable?

    Welcome to HWF :)

At the back of both devices are a group of pins with a black cap on it. On the label of each drive should be a guide showing Master, Slave and Cable Select. Look at the location of the Master setting on the 1st drive by putting the cap on the correct pins. Set the 2nd drive to Slave. It doesn't matter which one you use for each setting.

You can use both drives on the same cable. This is no problem, as long as the drives are configured as Master and Slave.

or place the jumper on SC (cable select)
it did matter that HDD was master but it doesn't anymore, CS is actually very good because it essentially lets the cable decide which device is master & slave, however, in realiaty the device connected to the end connector (farthest from mobo) is always master & the device connected to the middle IDE connector is always slave
    this is useful because:

you can move any IDE device to either master or slave by simply moving the devices location on the cable without fannying around with the jumpers

    this is also good because:

jumpers suffer from wear & tear by moving them BTW each IDE cable can be set to master / slave or CS independantly

Edit: i've being using CS only on my primary IDE channel for years

i think your referring to SATA
