    Hi friends,

I'm pretty sure this will sound kind of stupid for some of you but, I would like to create a brain storm about what you guys use to do when you face a slow system.

In my case this is what I use to do:

1- msconfig: Try to stop every unnecessary services and applications.
Here I have some doubts. In system with Norton and McAfee installed there are a lot of services relates to these applications. I would like to know which of these services I can stop and which I cant, in order to keep the software running.

2- ccclean: Delete all the temporary files, cookies and useless stuff

3- Run a virus check: Sometimes these bad guys are the responsible of the slow systems.

After these 3 steps....what else do you think would help? Do you guys agree with my procedure?

    I will appreciate every opinion.

    Thanks.

    -Defrag drive
-Move page file to a second HDD
-Use Error checking in the drives tools tab
-You'd also have to think about optimizations too.

Thanks Tech...lets re-build the list so, ate the end we will have a good guide:

1- msconfig: Try to stop every unnecessary services and applications.
Here I have some doubts. In system with Norton and McAfee installed there are a lot of services relates to these applications. I would like to know which of these services I can stop and which I cant, in order to keep the software running.

2- ccclean: Delete all the temporary files, cookies and useless stuff

3- Run a virus check: Sometimes these bad guys are the responsible of the slow systems.

    4- Defrag HDD

I have some doubts in the other steps you suggested. For you or somebody else who want to join us in this discussion:

-Move page file to a second HDD
How to do this?..Why does this speed up the system?

-Use Error checking in the drives tools tab
Would really the scandisk help the system speed?

--You'd also have to think about optimizations too.
What Optimization tool?...What do they do?

    Thanks again...

These are just general steps, regardless of the computer specs.
Who knows what do these Optimizers do??..Are they free?...Where I can download them from?

Do you have a different set of tools/procedures you use to speed up/tune up computers depending on the specs(amount of memory, processor type, hdd...etc)???..wow

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't care too much about if the system has an intel or amd processor or 512MB or 1GB in RAM or 40GB or 160GB in the HDD.
That information is important for other issues. If the system has viruses or it is uncommonly slow then the steps to follow are pretty much the same for every system.

Oh...and I posted because I think this forum it is not only for solving urgent problems, but for learning too. I've faced this problem a lot of time, and I have my own procedure, but I wanted to share it and feed myself with other's too.

Kill things with msconfig and uninstalls
    Clear up the registry
    Full run of Anti-vir/Spybot S&D/Adaware 2007/Spyware blaster
Increase the swap file size and location
    Reduce windows visual elements
Remove norton internet security replace with NOD32 & Firewall of your choice
    Install latest GFX/Mobo drivers
Remove redundant PCI cards (old modems no longer used etc)
    Defrag
Bootvis after a defrag can really help older HDD's with crappy seek times
    Hoover out the dust
    Send back to user

Operating systems actually have a life cycle. If it's a horribly old OS install, just reformat and reinstall. XP isn't as bad as the older OS's but a reformat and reinstall is recommended like at least once a year.

OK! Here is my point, " RAM' NOT ENOUGH AND PC WILL RUN (SLOW)
HARD DRIVE : TOO SMALL AND PC WILL RUN (SLOW) / problems..
PROCESSOR SPEED : TOO SMALL AND WILL RUN (SLOW)
Anyway, check out TuneUp 2007 , it is one of the best and I install it on all my
customers pc's.. there is an option to fine tune /speed up your pc..

How do you clean the registry? Is there any specific tool you use for that? I know the internet is full of tools for this but I don't trust anyone. Do you recommend one?

How to increase the swap file and location?

About Norton....I AGREE 100% Thats a bag full of rocks.

    Bootvis...what is this?

    Thanks..

PD: I hope after this discussion we will have a very nice checklist for every technician.

Microsoft bootvis lays out the files needed for boot procedure in order - if you do this after a defrag it will mean that everything needed for the computer to boot is in order on the HDD - speeding the boot process, works wonders on old laptops.
    Bootvis - |MG| BootVis 1.3.37.0
    Registry - CCleaner - Home
Swap file adjustments - right click my comp>properties>advanced>performance-settings>advanced>virtual memory - change

Increasing the swap file isnt a performance increase to most people, it can be set badly sometimes but generally simply increasing it won't give any marked increase.

Best to put 'Check swap file size and best location'

It's always a bit of a personal preference and as far as I can remember every discussion we've had about it here has never had a unanimous agreed recommendation.

    There is many tips here

1-) Go to Start->Run, type msconfig and press ok. Thats an utility to choose what services and programs you want to run at startup. You should be careful, because you may stop services you don't want to.

2-) CClean: You can download it. its a very useful software to delete temporary fies, cookies, registry keys you don't use.

5-)Bootvis: Its an application. I haven't tries yet. But you can read about that in this threat.

6-)Swap File: You can read about it in this thread.
