Hi all This has probably been posted before by another fella, but I'd like to get a new box (hdd and cpu), so basically i want to get a new box, without the monitor and printer in the package. Any suggestions on what I should get? With choosing between amd and pentium, I really don't care, but if any of you feel that one is better than the other, or if there's one better than both amd and pentium, then lemme know! :swt:
Whats your budget? What are you going to be using it for? What OS do you want? Will it be networked? If you really want a new computer then i'll help you, but without trying to be offensive, this is similiar to a coursework scenario.. I have my suspicions because of the way you have posted.. you provide no details.. you simply want an answer that states the difference between AMD and Pentium, and why.. and what system you should build.. on the conclusion of the AMD v Pentium.
lolz No no, it's nothing like that, I sware! I really am gonna be getting a new computer; I just need help in knowning what kind would be good. You don't even need to specify the difference between amd and pentium if you don't want to, i just wanted to know which of the 2 is better is all... Sorry I didn't post a cost limit. The limit is $1500 CAD. - Win XP Pro for sure (but if there's an OS that's better, let me know ) - I do have a wireless network set up in my house to share Internet on 3 computers. - It's going to be used for school work, but I enjoy playing games too, so if I get Half Life 2, it'd be cool if my computer could handle it very nicely. If you need more details, let me know...
Well HL2 is not that demanding graphics wise, much more CPU demanding, so get a mobile 2500+ barton cpu, and overclock it with a good cooler. An older pc of mine running a ge-force 2 32mb plays HL2 fine.. at about 30fps I'd get: AMD Mobile 2500+ (CPU) Coolermaster Jet 7+ or CoolerMaster Hyper 6 or Asus Star Ice Cooler(Heatsink & Fan) Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe K7 (Motherboard) 2 x 512mb Geil PC4000 (Memory) 80GB Western Digital Serial ATA HDD ATI 9800Pro 128Mb (Graphics) 420-500Watt Powersupply from either: Enermax/OCZ/ThermalTake/Antec Coolermaster Centurion 5 - Black/Silver (No PSU) (CA-075-CM) (Case) *Edit.. OMG thats cheap. (BIGB's below post) OMG b*astard canadians and US gits!
Okay, if you're just getting the box, this should be a nice setup. Since you're in the Great White North, I'll use NCIX as a reference, with prices in the Canadian $. Motherboard: -Abit AV8, Socket 939 motherboard ----$146.76 CPU: -Athlon 64 3500+, Socket 939, Retail box (includes heatsink) ---$355.53 RAM: -Kingston HyperX 1024MB (1GB) PC3200, 2x 512MB sticks ----$350.30 Video Card: -XFX GeForce 6600GT AGP 128MB ------$309.98 Hard Drive: -Western Digital 80GB, 8MB cache, ATA100 ----$82.70 -Optical Drive: LG GSA-4160B, DVD+/-RW, CD-RW, IDE ----$94.01 -Case Antec SX1040 Performance II, Black w 400W Antec Power supply ------------$135.65 Total: $1,474.93 A few notes: -The hard drive and optical drive are OEM, meaning you don't get a big fat bundle. You do get software with this particular optical drive, but NCIX doesn't have it with all of them as far as burners go -If you get another case, make sure to get a power supply, even if it has one bundled with it. The reason is, Antec bundles their own power supplies with their cases and these are good quality units. Other cases bundle cheap, crappy power supplies that are either under powered (despite whatever wattage they may claim) and/or not large enough to accomodate your system to start with. Antec, Sparkle, Thermaltake, or Enermax are good brands to stick with. If you really want to splurge, PC Power & Cooling has some awesome units, but the are extremely expensive ($200 USD for their 510W unit). -If you stick with AMD, stick with a Socket 939 processor as AMD has relegated Socket 754 to the budget sector and has said there won't be any faster CPU's than the Athlon 3400+. -If having 1GB is too much for you, that's fine. To get the most out of your CPU, get a dual-channel kit for starters. This has two matched sticks of memory, which is a requirement for dual-channel memory setups, like all Socket 939 systems have. Get PC3200 (DDR400) or faster if you like, but don't get anything slower. Make sure you don't get anything less than 512MB or you'll suffer some performance. -Make sure you stick with AGP video cards, as there are some that are PCIe (PCI Express) and will not work with any other slot but a PCIe 16x one. Half-Life 2 can run at good resolutions without an uber-expensive card. I wouldn't get anything less than a Radeon 9600, 9600Pro or 9600XT (skip the 9600SE). -Price doesn't include the OS, shipping, any applicable taxes or floppy drive. -Feel free to go to an optical drive that's not as expensive.
You guys are amazing! Thanks a bunch for your help, I'm so excited about getting a new comp, my current computer is not so good, so a new computer would be wonderful!
It's an Intel Pentium 4 Processor: - 3GHz Processor - 160GB SATA hard drive - 1 GB RAM (2 512MB sticks) - CD/DVD readable/playable drive - floppy drive - Intel 82915G Express Chipset Family - Samsung LCD HDTV Dolby Digital Surround Sound Monitor 17" - Windows XP Media Centre Edition I didn't quite get the big GeForce 9600 video card, because my mom said it would be too expensive, and I don't play much videogames anyway, so it's ok. This video card that I do have is good enough for the majority of the games anyway. Overall, I'm happy with the computer I got, and thank you all for your help! =) :good: :chk: :chk: :good:
