So how did you find HWF and what was your motive?

I needed information on my computer case's USB ports. If I remember correctly, I was looking for a particular cable. The first member to answer my cry for help was the B master ;)

I think I found this place through Yahoo (which makes sense...). Something happened and I ended up sticking around :D

But yeah, I've learned a hell of a lot too.

I joined because I could not get sound in WMP 10 on video playback. Since then, I have learned how to install a HD, DVD rewriter, new processor, extra RAM and much more! Not too bad for someone that could only sit and operate a computer up until few short months ago.

I have tried a couple of other forums prior to HWF, but responses (if any) to posts were poor by comparison. So, a big thank you to all of you - your help has been invaluable and I’ve learned so much.

    Dave.

I was looking for some kind of place where I can help others coz I used to stick around with some others forums, which is not related to coputers and they had one section for technical problems. Most of their problems were easy.
One day, I decided to look for computer hardware forum because I knew that my knowledge is not good enough. I searched the google and found this at first place as I am fuckin search freak. (75% of solutions I find out by searching) I saw some questions and given their answers..... Before my area of interest was Software and Hardware side. Then I started looking on the other areas as well like community, gaming etc... From where I found the environment around this place, which is realy awsome and unbleaveable. I love the environment here, which makes me come back and back again to this place.
This website has given me confidence in so many things relating to computer.

From my perspective, the whole point of HWF is to help people help themselves. It's not about giving a simple yes/no---download the fix here type stuff. It's educating people to learn how to troubleshoot and understand the logic and principles behind things. Understanding the principle and logic ultimately ends up being better than simply giving an answer because if these are understood, the person can apply this to more than just their particular problem. Will they get it right away? Probably not, but neither did I back in 1998. Back then, using a search engine was difficult. Once I knew how to properly use that, things became a lot easier. I saw my dad put my first box together and figured that wasn't too difficult for me to do. It went from there.
I've come from the n00b status myself and I remember how it was. It took me a few years to understand troubleshooting, but once I did, that helped tremendously. I've plenty to learn myself, and I'm sure that's what others will say too. Nothing's worse than a know-it-all asshole who belittles n00bs. Everybody was a n00b at one point, but the nicer ones remember they were and how they became educated.
I know what a fried CPU smells like, 'nuff said.

How I came here? Sniper saw my Geocities website (I took it down a few years ago) and shot me an e-mail about joining. I was onboard another website (which has been defunct for several years), but decided to go with this one. I don't remember why I went, but it ended up being the right move.

Yup, you and Sniper are the HWF Godfathers :agree:

So, what was this place like 4 or 5 years ago? Did it have a different look? Was it busy? Any stories to tell?

    One time, at band camp...

Not really, it just was a lot less busy. I'm talking 1 new post per week if we were lucky. It's close to 5 years at least, given that I came onboard in December 2001. I know Syngod was there, but he went away because of business obligations in his life. We were originally Techwarenet, but we relaunched as Zone365 with HWF as the forums. Given the popularity of HWF, I think we may eventually do away with Zone365 and have the articles in here, but that's not for sure. I'm pretty picky about the easy of inserting articles, and I'm sure Sniper won't deny how much of a stickler I am for organization. Usually, forum changes were discussed, but the full implementation was done when Sniper was on break from the University.

We did use an FTP at one point, but, there was some wierd voodoo going on, and likely it was on my end, so that was fun.

Dark secrets...I dunno. Other than not always being HWF, that's about it.

I'm sure HWF was originally just a place for B to get his topless pictures posted on the 'net. :p

You guys have lots of patience and you brought this website to this very good point(I believe). According to this speed, this website will become very busy with around 7000+ members by the end of this year.
