    What's the problem?

This is a fairly old system, and I'm currently researching new parts on an ATX Motherboard with a Abit Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition. So I'm looking to replace this system rather soon, but I want to know what is causing my problems.

Currently, on the system listed above I am unable to play games that I could normally play before. Not like I used to. After I restart the computer and turn on an game, the game runs smooth and perfect for about five minutes. After that, I'll suddenly run into a massive lag spike that is completely unrelated to the software.

I often tested my system in various forms of trouble shooting, each time it did the same thing. Unable to handle things it normally could without a problem. The CPU isn't overtaxed because I have a single character on the screen not performing any actions.

I tried it on about six different games, each time the same problem. Always after five minutes. If I leave the game on, about ten minutes later the lag spike will go away and I can play the game again. But once more, only for about five minutes before the lag returns. So It's very inconsistent and very annoying.

What have I done to trouble shoot so far?

I've run numerous performance managers and system monitors to see what occurs during the lag spikes. There is no visible change in the RAM or CPU. No new programs run in the back ground. I did a completely reformat and the problem still persists, so I figured it was a hardware issue.

I removed the RAM chips and alternated them into different slots one at a time. The problem still persists.

I currently only have one video card, but that doesn't seem to be the issue since the performance goes back to normal after about five to ten minutes before going back to lag-town.

So far I'm left with two major factors. The Motherboard and the CPU. The CPU is ancient, so I'm pretty sure it's on its last legs. Thus why I'm seeking he best one on the market currently. And the Motherboard too has been through its paces. I'm confident one, or both, are dying. Perhaps someone could give me some feedback? I've googled like crazy, but it seems a problem like this is hard to really describe.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Um please? I could really use the help. I want to know what part it is I need to replace, so I can do that and not have to throw out a good PC. Yes, I want new parts for a new system. But I still want this one to work. Am I right? Is a roller coaster of performance inconsistency due to motherboard and cpu failure?
