I need some help with installing a third hard drive, this is what i have now,i have 2 hard drives on ide2 one as master with winxp and one slave with linspire,i have cd & dvd roms on ide1 one master and one slave, what i'm trying to do is add another hard drive to try out different linux distros,i do have ide3 on my soyo sypi845pe motherboard,if i left anything out let me know an any help would be appreciated
I have not tried to install hard drive yet just wondering how much trouble if any it would be to add one to the ide3
No ninja fetus, he has 3 IDE channels (i have them too, but have never used them) Your best option is just to plug in the third drive on IDE 3 and see if it works and post the result here. I would reccomend you set up your drives like this (the lower the number of the IDE the higher its priority), Its best to have Hard Discs on lower numbers cos you will use them more often. IDE 1 > 2 Hard Discs (with the mosts used OS's) IDE 2 > 1 Hard Disc IDE 3 > 1 CD/DVD Drive You can put the other CD/DVD Drive on IDE 2 or 3 depending on your layout (is the cable long enough to scretch from the HD cage to the CD Cages?) If ether of the Drives can burn discs then try to get that drive onto IDE 2. P.s If you cant get IDE 3 to work, use partition magic to re-arraneg the partitions on your current hard discs and install multiple OS's on them.
my ide3 can only have hdd on it,anyways i'm going to try putting the other hard drive on ide3 just to see if i can get it to work if it works or when i get it to work i will post back an let you all know how it went
whoa that's a new one to me *blushes* pretty interesting... shouldn't be much more than plugging it in i suppose
I would hope thats the idear.... but i have never used it (so have no clue) its beacoming a standard thing, most motherboards (especialy MSI) have them.... and if you dont have one you prolly have the circut wiring where they could have put one! its late..... night all!
Yeah, make the drive a master on its own chain if possible. If not, it's worth adding a >$30 PCI IDE controller so you have enough channels. As for Linux distros to try, I'd recommend Mandriva, SUSE, Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Vector, or CentOS. Enjoy, -AT
