Hi all, I loaded my new WIN XP onto my old win ME platform without reformatting the HD, is this ok ? also when the install was compelte, I was expecting to see more than the recycle bin on my desktop. Was expecting My Documents folder and Explorer, am I correct and any ideas how to fix ? Thx !
If I remember rightly, WinXP starts with a blank screen with just one icon which is the bin.... I find it amuzing... never mind.... As for installing over ME, did you get any prompts along the installation asking you if you wish to upgrade or install afresh? Windows, big-brotherish as it might be, I think does ask you these questions during the installation. Personaly, I would always run a proper format before installing a new OS. Good luck with the new install. Do you know how to get the desired icons on your desktop?
Thx for the info ... I think it asked me to install from fresh ... Not 100% sure how to get the icons onto desktop, can add shortcuts ok, but would like explorer, My Computer at least .. Thx.
Hi If windows installed from fresh than I think we can safely assume that Windows did its thang and formatted the drive to a certain level, difinitly to get rid of ME. Moving on - Right click anywhere on that lovely desktop to bring up the desktop menu (make sure you do not click on any other icon... :x: ) Then click on 'Properties'. In the new box click on the 'Desktop' tab. Next click on the 'Customise Desktop' button. In the new box choose the icons you wish to show on the desktop. You can also choose to change the actual icons. Marvelous.... aint it? Good luck....
This is the one easiest way but if you are interested then you can do like this as well... Go to Start and Right Click on My Computer and then click on show this on desktop........ and if you want to bring a programs shortcut on the desktop then right click on the program file > copy.......come to desktop, Right Click > Paste Shortcut.... Voilla
