In my never-ending quest to buy a new computer(TM), I'm a bit puzzled by the new Intel Core 2 Duo 6420, that has 4MB cache. Since the 6420 is a good deal cheaper, can anyone tell me how much of a difference there is between the 6420 and the 6600?

This is intended for a gaming PC (with a 8800GTS 640MB and 2GB of RAM, no overclocking planned).

your right in the speed: the 6600 is 270MHz faster (x4ish*) than the 6420. the difference will be worth £20 (since scan.co.uk is selling them at around £20 difference)

*overall 486mhz difference between cores, worth £20 but no more.

however, as far as gaming goes you shouldnt get any difference as processors dont play a big role with it, there will only be a significiant difference in performance if you're a heavy CPU user (ie, video editing etc)

    Recap: I'd get the 6600

    Hope this helps

The 6x20's are newer, and Intel is increasing the cache on them along with some other features I don't recall. I think I read it over at Anandtech on some blurb.
