Intel Core i3-4340 Haswell vs. AMD FX6300

Hi,

I am very new to PC building and wanted to make an inquiry about a possible system I am planning to build (first timer).

My goal is to build a system in the $600 range for regular day-to-day usage and occasional gaming. For the former, I think AMD FX6300 would suffice, however, for the later, such as Skyrim ES or GTA 5, after reading quite a bit, I am, now, on the fence and do not know which way to go.

I am not a hard core gamer, and my intentions are not to put together a top of the line gear (as the price range hints). Nonetheless, I would like to know which CPU can deliver a better performance for multi-tasking and gaming (I might attempt to do some overclocking). I also understand that my request also depends on other components, but I thought, if I can nail down the CPU, I can put the remaining puzzle pieces together.

Thank you.

There will not be any new CPU's from AMD or Intel (Haswell refresh and HSA processors don't count) for long time. Therefore two possibilities are highly recommended: AMD FX-8320 and Intel i5-4670K. There is little point to buy FX-6300, price difference against FX-8320 is not that great. There's absolutely no point to buy any i3 model, expensive and if one is planning to upgrade on i5, it does not get any cheaper so it's same to buy i5 right away.

Your budget limits so FX-8320 (or FX-6300 if you really cannot afford FX-8320) is your choice. For multitasking FX-processors are awesome vs dual core i3 processors.

After some consideration since yesterday, you are absolutely right. It's better to go with FX-8xxx or Intel i5 (quad-core), since I would like to have a medium to low system for the next 2 to 3 years then make a big upgrade.

I even found FX-8350 at my local store for $150. I am also accepting the fact that I wouldn't be using this rig for gaming much (I am not a gamer to begin with), so there is no point to go hell-bent on the CPU (maybe a better graphic card).

Yep, FX-8xxx is very cheap right now and you can built high end system aound it for at least 2-3 years. Graphics cards on the other hand costs much right now so it's better to maximize CPU, not graphics.
