Internet access on laptop - no go, so far!

Well, I finally have taken the plunge and opted to go wireless broadband, as opposed to a hard-wire ethernet connection.

Bought myself a Netgear wireless broadband modem/router from Virgin Media and was able to set it up on my laptop and get an internet connection. Good, but my aim is have my Linux PC (upstairs) and my laptop (downstairs) running from this wireless connection - the reasoning being, that I can use the laptop downstairs for internet access and not have bloody wires trailing from it - make sense, yes?

Okay - so I then took the new wireless modem/router upstairs and connected it up to my desktop Linux PC - and it connected to the internet - hoorah!! Well, i thought I'd cracked it now - all I have to do now is configure my laptop downstairs to pick up the signals from the wireless router upstairs, and I'll have internet access on the laptop as well. No joy - I try to connect to my new 'Netgear' network - am asked for my WAP key (which I set up earlier on the laptop - I enter that, but can't establish a connection to the internet.

I rang technical support and was asked how far away the laptop was from the router - it's 30 feet. i was told that this was probably too long a distance to make a connection!

Okay, so i decided to take the laptop upstairs - placing it just 4 feet from the wireless router - and it still would not connect. I told the tech support guy that I thought he was barking up the wrong tree over the issue of such a short distance being the cause of the laptop not being able to connect to the internet (I refer to the 30 feet), but let's bear in mind that it would not work, even when it was just 4 feet from the wireless router!

I could really use some help here guys - so let's cut to the chase:

I have an internet connection using the wireless router which is hooked up to my Linux PC - both of which are upstairs. Just down the stairs (about 30 feet away) - I have my laptop. Can you think of any reason why the laptop will not pick up the required signals from the upstairs router and be able to connect to the internet. Any help would be appreciated, as this is driving me crazy!!

Cheers,

David.

Thanks for your help, Saba. I've just got it sorted via Netgear's tech support. It needed to have the 'Access control' box unchecked in the Netgear online setup screen. No, don't ask me to explain the logic of that (I would have thought it would have to be the other way round!

The connection seems quiet fast, but is not as fast as a wired connection - I think we all accept that. There is, of course, the question of security. I've put in a strong encryption WAP key, and hope that will suffice.
