When my friend trys to enter the internet the "Performing an illegal operation" boxs comes up. He tried restarting tons of times and hes booted in safe mode and it still doesn't work. I don't have any experience in Windows 98 HEEEELLLPP ASAP PLZ :confused:

Download firefox on a working PC. Burn it to CD, then install it on his system.
If his Internet connection works through Firefox, the next thing you'll want to do is install anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Do a thourough check of the system, since something nasty could have killed his browser. Otherwise, it could just be his FAT32 filesystem dying. :(
 
I cant he's miles away from me.
They have many anti-virus/spyware programs his dads obsessed about keeping the pc safe. So I doubt it'll b dat

Well, the virus definitions must current for even the best AV to be effective. As for Firefox, surely he knows somebody with Internet and a CD-Burner? The download is under 10mb.

Hmmph, his SOCKS could be screwed up. I'd definately recommend a reinstall. His FAT32 is probably looking like Swiss Cheese. :( If he can backup any important data, he should, and move on says I.

Chances are, his HDD is still good if it's been cooled properly to this point. FAT32 is a really old filesystem, the one 98/ME use by default. It has nothing to do with the HDD. What I'm saying is that FAT32 degrades quickly over time, and so he needs to reformat his HDD, and reinstall everything from scratch.
