I need help on connecting to the web on my new first build pc.
I just put xp pro on and i just put a few drivers on but when i connect my ethernet cable to my cable modem, then to my pc ethernet port nothing happens, i want the computer to automatically detect the connection but nothing happens, can anyone help?
I am using the built in ethernet on my motherboard, the drivers are installed.

EDIT: Every time i click IE to run it i keep getting the open with box and the only options are notepad and WINDOWS picture and fax viewer.

You need to make sure you have 'Enabled' the interface in Network Connections, and after that, you have to configure your Modem with your Username and Password etc......
Usually you open a Internet Browser and connect to 10.0.0.1 or something.
Your ISP will tell you how to do this :)

    P.S - Try out FireFox!

Most cable modems don't require software to interface with your PC (most of them don't use PPoe).

Are you getting link lights on both ends? That's the first thing to check.

If not, then you need to check device manager and make sure your lan adapter is working. If it is, go to network connections and try right clicking on your lan connection and choosing repair.

The thing that really worries me is IE not opening when you click it. You may want to do an SFC /SCANNOW as well.

Yea i am getting link lights at both ends. Well if you mean the ethernet light on the modem lights up and the light that you connect the ethernet to the pc lights up then yes.

But the little pcs do not appears on the desktop, you know at the bottom right corner.

Hmm, in the device mangager it is known only as the nvidia network adaptor (this is the one that is built in to the motherboard).

And i cant rightclick on lan connection and choose repair because there is nothing in the my connections folder.

And i dont have a system scan or anything. There are no options for disk defrag or system scan or anything.
