I'm thinking of getting this Buffalo WHR-G54S router. It has excellent reviews but a lot of them say it's superbly good only after u flash the DD-WRT firmware to it. Otherwise, in its original state it works kinda awkwardly, they say. So I dunno if I'm getting myself into something a bit technical by going that route. I kinda just want something that will work 100% hassle-free (preferably with easy setup) and get the job done (without losing connection, needing reboots, etc.) even if it doesn't have any nifty features. I'm honestly not educated/experienced in this networking stuff at all.

So is this firmware flashing business easy? If so, then maybe I'll get it after all...

Well I upgraded my Netgear router's software as well as my access point and it seemed fine, it also added a few more features. It was as simple as getting the right firmware file, and just using the webmin tool to upgrade it to the newest version.

It's pretty easy to do but there is a certain level of risk to it. If something goes wrong - say a powercut while the firmwire is being upgraded - the router becomes useless and will need to be replaced
