Ive got a wireless adsl router which works fine with the pc its hardwired to but the pc connected wirelessly keeps losing connection from the router. I cant work out if the router is to blame or my usb wireless adapter.

On the router there are lights for adsl connection and wireless connection. These lights flicker almost continuously and im wondering if whatever is behind the flickering lights is causing my wireless pc to lose connection. People suggest upgrading the firmware for my router which I didnt want to do at first but desperation prevailed only to find netgear has a shit website which wont let you download stuff. Not unless its just me pressing my left mouse button incorrectly, thats my kind of luck. See if you can download the firmware....
    DG834v3 & DG834Gv3 Firmware Version 4.01.28UK/4.01.27WW

Sometimes the wireless pc can connect to the router but rarely gives me internet access. If I connect to the router for 2 mins im doing good, and if I get net time to load up google im doing really good!

What do you guys reckon, router or usb adapter?

Ive tried plugging the router into the master phone socket (still flickers) and the signal is 5 bars out of 5 all the time. So far its been a waste of £90. All so I could do that message stuff on msn with my sister today.... its too late now!

Something to consider; there is a BT homehub near me which I think I can connect to if I use the password "password" The black lock on my adapter settings page goes green sometimes.... like it does when I connect to my router. There is another netgear router nearby without any lock which when I click "connect" on I get a green lock indicating im connected. I havent had net access through either yet but it can take up to an hour to connect to mine so is my usb adapter ok? The routers in the list never disappear, I just have difficulty connecting to them.

At this rate I think I would prefer not to have the net at all, at least that way I will keep my blood pressure down. I feel I could knock Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, Prince Naseem and the Incredible Hulk out all in one sitting at the moment!

Well ive just plugged the usb adapter into the pc that was hardwired and it connected instantly and has been on the net for 6 mins now so maybe its my other computer.

Ok, so why would a pc with a fresh install of windows 2000 repeatedly disconnect from a wireless network.
    Computers are bollocks!

something to consider, is your WIFI being disrupted by a neighbors WIFI[ot]i don't know how to change the frequency range or if you can[/ot]
no, it appears to be starting to DL & suddenly it changes to DLed but the zip file doesnt exist[ot]it could be being blocked by the HW firewall in my router but i've not experienced a problem before[/ot]

BTW: i'm using Kubun Feisty with no software firewall, also using Swiftfox but DL doesn't start in Opera

    router everytime
    can i watch ?

thanks, Im gonna try and update the windows install but I know I wont get enough time to do that. The computer with an updated windows 2000 pro works fine. Ive got Windows 2000 Server.... hopefully that might come to the rescue if I cant update my Windows 2000 pro. It needs more system resources than 2000 pro, more than I have :( Im only on a PII Celeron.

why don't you slipstream the updates into a new Win2k CD ?
why not venture into *nix[ot]much much better with older hardware[/ot]BTW: DL some LiveCDs to see which *nix you like[ot]have you used *nix ?[/ot]

I dont have the patience for linux. Ive tried LFS, Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past and although I got on with it ok id prefer to stick to windows. Besides my rom drive doesnt accept cd-r! and Ubuntu is way too demanding for my pc. One of my ram sticks packed up the other day so im down to 64mb!

Ive gotta restart now after my update. Ive hijacked the office and now the office worker is back too. This had better work!

i didn't think i had either, but Debian 4 can now be used with automatix[ot]automatix is brilliant[/ot]it makes any supported OS a piece of piss to use / keep updated[ot]you only need to remember a few commands to type
you can buy a Debian CD from plenty of online vendors, or buy a new drive, about £15 from PC(rip me off)World, or a little computer shop[ot]sorry, i'm not pushing *nix on you, but, its just a lot better than Win[/ot]
can't find requirements for Debi, it should work though

64mb will be fine, as long as you don't try and run the kitchen sink. :) A light Window manager like WindowMaker or Fluxbox would be wonderfully fast on debian with 64mb RAM. If you want something a little more full-featured, I wouldn't go an ounce heavier than Xfce. Post a new thread in the linux forums if you decide to go this route, and I'll pitch in to help you out.

P.S. - If you need more RAM, it looks like your Dell uses SDRAM. I happen to have a few hundred megs of the stuff laying around, collecting dust. If you pay for shipping, I'll mail you some.

Well 6 hours and 63 Windows updates later and it still didnt work. One trip to PC World, another £10 and 30 secs later my new Netgear PCI card has me on the net from my very own PC!

I tried that Belkin USB thing on 5 pcs and 2 routers and it couldnt hold a solid connection on any.... I got about 20mins on 1 of the computers. That was my record.

I think I will install Linux on a spare hdd just to see how much I am happy to use. Ive always wanted to go the linux way, im a bit of an "anti trend" myself :) but just dont have the time for computers anymore. I only read my junkmail these days!

Im so made up I feel like getting drunk and its only 10:30! Id better get a job before I fall into bad habits!
