hey all,

The charity i work for is switching there 2 analogue phone lines to ISDN adding an extra phone number in the process (3 numbers, with one number supporting 2 phones at the same time).

I am assuming that the phones will work (the BT engineers should deal with that), the worrys that i have are what affects with this have on internet access (ADSL) and there is a fire alarm which calls the fire brigade if the alarm goes off.

I really am NOT qualified to deal with this! (I'm not qualified by a certificate to do most things i can, but this i currently know next to nothing about). But I'm the only employee with an understanding of most things computer related and so have had this more or less dumped on me half way through!

I believe the alarm can be connected through a terminal adapter (like i assume all the phones will have, but god knows!), but what about the ADSL modem?

i really don't understand why the didn't just get one line changed, and have 2 numbers on that one leaving one phone number, the alarm and the ADSL line on the other... this really is a bit of a shambles :/ (but my aim is to keep everything working when the lines change on Wednesday [21st jan 07]).
 
So the fire alarm needs to be connected to a phone line? You might consider buying a cable splitter at the point where the telephone is connected to. Then connect the telephone and the fire alarm to the splitter. I know someone with the same problem. Changing to a digital phone line could cause some trouble. I've made a sketch of the old and new situation.

I Think you might have missed the point Karanislove, my only worry was connecting a analogue phone (alarm autodialer) upto a ISDN line.

The lines where converted today, with a slight deviation from the original plan. we now have 4 ISDN channels and a analogue line, which will be used for the fire alarm, Broadband (from Monday) and an Emergency Phone (as we cant use the ISDN phones when the power's off).

We now have a *real* phone network :D (we can pass calls between phones, set rules for the order in which calls jumping between phones / voice mail etc). fun all round, and i got to have a look around the basement (which floods occasionally, just a few feet of water when it does tho :P).

In the end i passed the buck for the alarm, i didn't want to be responsible for it so i called the firm which installed it and got them to sort it! (lucky the BT engineers where still around when one of there engineers turned up as he had no equipment for wire tracing! :O).

I feel like i've learned a few things today :D
