I want to upgrade my celeron 466 (socket 370 slotketted to slot 1) on a 440BX chipset motherboard to a PIII. I saw that my motherboard switches can only support up to 550 MHz PIII or 466 MHz Celeron. Should I choose Katamai or Coppermine PIII? Which is better?

    thx

I think the Katmai is better because it has an extra 256k of L2 cache over coppermine. But I'm not certain.

While the Katami core does have more cache, it's running at about 1/2 the speed of the CPU. With the Coppermine, it only has 256k of L2 cache, but it runs at the same speed as the CPU. Additionally, the Coppermines use a smaller manufacturing process which leads to less heat. It also uses less voltage than that Katami core.

Go with the Coppermine. While arguably no Intel processor can perform as well clock-for-clock as the Athlon family, the Coppermine was one of the best for its day. In addition, I've found Coppermines to have a pretty flexible FSB and to be able to overclock up to 30%.
