The KDE Screensaver no longer runs, this started happening after I deleted my .kde directory (to fix the mouse freezing problem I had)

It appears to be working OK in the configure desktop screensaver setup. I've set it to run every 4 minutes and i've selected a random screensaver to run everytime. If I press the test button, it works no problem.

However, the screensaver never comes on, no matter how long I wait for it

I had the same issue when I updated from KDE 3.5.1 to 3.5.3 (compile from source). I recompiled the screensaver tools (sorry I don't have the package names right now) to a newer version and it worked again.

Are you using the xscreensaver extension for KDE or just the built-in screensavers?

Yes, I downloaded the kscreensaver-xsavers package to link Xscreensavers with KDE's screensavers

Did you recreate your .kde directory after deleting it?

I'm sure that the screensaver settings are held there so you may have destroyed a needed link in the .kde

Have you tried to log in as a different user and see if they work? If so, then it is probably just missing from your ~.kde directory. You can compare the files and see what is different.

    Good points

For the time being, I'm running Xscreensaver rather then KDE screensaver. This set up works quite well, but I'd rather be able to configure the screensaver through KDE.

I'll have a good look at the .kde directory a bit later as you say
