Welcome to hardwareforums Mike Richards

It sounds like your keyboard layout is set for an American keyboard, there are instructions on how to change your keyboard layout in windows XP & Vista HERE

I cant remember the name of the keyboard layout you want, but i know it is referred to as a generic UK or Brittish layout (or something similar), i would check for you but i don't run windows and can't find any screen shots of it in google, sorry!

Obviously you only want the British layout if you have a British keyboard (but from your description i think you do)
