YES IM NEW Hello and thank you for this forum. I wont beat about the bush so here it is.I bought a second hand pc for my kids to muck about on and on getting it home it worked fine, but it had windows ME on it and other stuff i didn`t want eg family trees and pictures. so i decided to try and put windows 98 on it,I have a 98 cd for pcs without windows but it would not let me install it until i got rid of any other versions which i couldnt from add remove programs. so like a fool i decided to use a boot up disc and try the 7 options but icant with any of them. the messages i get are starting win98 setup and then it says this version only runs on ms.dos 8.00. if i press f5 safe mode it says A:\> but i dont know what to type in, if i type something in it says bad command or file if i do master restore it says not ready reading drive x i. Is there something wrong with my discs i have a boot up,system restore floppy and win 98 cd from my old pc that does not work at all.Although i have never done this should i try to swap the hd,cd rom and memory to the pc i bought for my kids ( you can see im a novce) wish i had of left it as it was, only good thing it only cost £8.00.
Well, you can't uninstall ME. What you can do is format the hard drive. Boot off the Win98 startup floppy disk. When you get to the prompt type: format c: /s Reboot the machine. Now at the command prompt, type: e:\setup.exe Why no D? There's a virtual volume after C, so you have to skip down to E:
B's right before you can install Win98 you have to remove WinMe first boot from your Win98 boot disk to get rid of everything off the harddisk you type "format c: /s" at the command prompt format - wipes all info off to harddisk c: - specifies the drive to format /s - makes the computer boot to command prompt (A:\) thers no need to reboot (as B suggested) as you only need to reboot after running fdisk then type "D:/setup (where "D:" is the letter of your CD containing the Win98 CD
