laptop - windows ME problem

Hi, I have Windows ME installed on an old IBM laptop and am now all of a sudden encountering problems.

My son wants to play a game that requires 256 color settings. When I go to to Start/settings/control panel/display/settings. there is a "check box" in the lower left hand portion that is grayed out and I can not change it or "uncheck" the box to allow new settings?

Make any sense? let me know if you have any suggetsions. THanks
 
Off-hand it's a bit fuzzy, but I'd look into updating the graphics card drivers. If that's not possible, try reinstalling them.
