In a surprise move, Linspire is now offering its CNR ("Click 'N Run") software service at no charge to its Linspire and Freespire Linux distribution customers. In addition, the company will soon be open-sourcing the CNR Client.

Wow, color me floored. You weren't kidding about the "surprise move" part, were you? :) It's good to hear though, as new Linux users are often impressed by this distro, and Linspire is based right up the road from me. That's one more distro in my 'recommended' list for new users.

Freespire is perfect for newbies. It includes all the audio and video codecs you could want, plus drivers for ATi and nVidia. Now that it's completey free and community driven I wouldn't be suprised if this distribution troubles ubuntu at the top of the charts.

I've never actually used Freespire before but I think I might give it a go soon

After I pulled myself off the floor and got back in my chair... WOW

This is an interesting move. Linspire has an AOL dialer that used to be only available for the pay CNR. If anyone still uses AOL dial-up, this could be a god-send. I was trying to pull my girlfriend's mom off of windows about a year ago but she uses AOL and it is not linux friendly. Linspire's AOL dialer was the only one I could find that was sure to work. ...She still uses windows but now she has a free option.

    Disclaimer:
I in no way endorse or approve of the use of AOL. Use at your own risk and lame-ness

Not everyone is happy with the recent decision to free up CNR. I can't say I am suprised though, i'd be pretty angry too if I'd subscribed to the service!

I payed for Mandriva purposely, even though I can legally get it for free, because I wanted to support an underrated distro. I'll do the same for Debian in the form of a donation as soon as I have the funds to do so. People buy Windows every day and it's a horrible operating system; why not pay a few bucks for a good one? But just because you can pay for Linux doesn't mean you have to! It's the perfect solution for those of us who have finite funding. You can buy a whole PC for what Windows costs!
