My son has a laptop without CD drive. The drive has been formatted but I cannot see how to load Win98 on cd rom. I have an external cd rom drive (parallel ) but the driver is not recognized by DOS. Can anyone suggest how I can get windows onto the laptop?
If there's a DOS driver for the CD-ROM that's on a floppy, then yes. You probably could load the driver so that DOS could see it then run the install as normal. The other option would be to get ahold (if this is even possible for the laptop) of an internal CD drive for the laptop...again, if this is even a possibility for that particular laptop.
You could always remove the HDD from the laptop, place it in a system with a working CDROM, and do the initial install there. Then replace the HDD in your laptop and finalize the install (drivers, etc). Or if you feel brave enough to try something new, most modern Linux distros (such as SUSE) can easily be installed via FTP.
Or of course you could use the old fashion way (somewhat tougher) of using floppy drives. break the files down to floppy size and then shift to the laptop. For this check out the program called arj. www.arj.com
