I was hax0red for the first time today on my friend's insecure DSL connection (modem to PC). Command console started and text was flying across the screen. Errors popped up upon boot and stuff!
It's my pc on my friend's connection ! thanks to AVG+Sygate I think the hax0r is gone, after a nasty virus outbreak.
Always filter packets on an untrusted network! In other words, at least use a software firewall. It may be weak protection, but at least it's protection. I like Kerio Personal Firewall for Windows, as it's probably the closest you can get to IPTables for that platform. But it's not for those who are new to networking/routing concepts, as you are writing your own firewall rules. For n00bs, Sygate and ZoneAlarm are OK choices. But you must realize that a software firewall is only as secure as the OS it runs on, :swt: so a dedicated router is always the best solution whenever possible!
