While searching for a PIII 500MHZ processor for my proliant 800, I came across two different kind of 500mhz processors,... 1) INTEL/PENTIUM 3/500/100/512 S2 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5746914762&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT 2) 500/512/100/2.0V S1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14292&item=6740522659&rd=1 Now, I can understand all the description except for the "S1" and "S2" part. What does that mean,...
humm,.. found this on the net,... 100MHZ FRONT SIDE BUS 512KB LEVEL-2 CACHE SECC-2 Does the S2 stand for SECC-2 and S1 for SECC-1 here is the link: http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Compaq,Server,Part,114525001.aspx
Well, i dont know about the motherboard,.. but i do have a P3 500mhz processor here, tell me if you want it,.. But the question still remains what does the "S1" and "S2" stand for,...
SECC and SECC 2 were variations of the Intel slot type concerning the retention mechanism. It had nothing to do with the Pins on the processor cartridge. I'm thinking that the S1 and S2 are referring to Slot 1 and Slot 2, with 272 (i think) and 330 pins, respectively. It's also probable that the S2 type is a Slot 2, as that was a server-class motherboard piece only, not to mention the inclusion of the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module). I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm right or not, because I'm not seeing it on Intel's website. You may want to e-mail the seller and ask about it.
So, S2 are SLOT2 server class processors. Because I bought two S2 CPU's with VRM ( the link is given above), but the idiot (sorry if this word is not allowed) gave me two S1 processors. I spent the whole day trying to fix it in, but after installation, the PC would start till the BIOS and then again shutdown. Could the "S" issue be the case,..???
Possibly. Again, the S1 S2 part is just a guess, so don't take it as gospel. I know that the PII/III Xeon's were Slot 2, but I can't recall if any regular ones were.
Found some info. on the net, I hope this might help clarify somethings: "Intel® Pentium® II Processors come in two form factors. The SECC-2 form factor is a modified Single Edge Contact Cartridge (SECC). It features the same substrate with edge finger connections as the current Intel® Pentium® II Processors in SECC and utilizes the same 242-contact slot connector. The major difference is that the thermal plate has been removed, which allows for direct thermal interface with the processor core and better PBSRAM cooling. Several documents are available to help you integrate Intel® Pentium® II processors and Intel® Pentium® III Processors in the SECC-2 form factor into systems. We also offer tips for processor handling, suggestions for board and system integration of the processor package, and other information on shipping media and processor marking. The SECC-2 form factor is supported by the Universal Retention Mechanism or the SEPP-Only Retention Mechanism with plastic fasteners or metal fasteners." From the above, I think that the "S" doesn't denote "SLOT1 or 2".
