    Dreamweaver nuff said.

It also has options to make websites XHTML compliant - that'll be the way forward soon so it's good to get used to it early.

Yes it has code view, design view, or a split between the two. You can also preview in a browser (just press F12 and it'll ask you to save the page before viewing in a browser)

There's a free HTML editor called NVU.

There is one more good software MS Frontpage, which has these features
If you dont want to spend money at all on buying softwares then you can make websites in Notepad as well. Type your Tags and save as file.html but thats the hardest way.

    Coding by hand is fun!

Yeah I've used frontpage before, and well it plain sucks imo.

Frontpage sucks, used to use it. The new dreamweaver (8) became user friendly now especially for begginners you can see the code, the design or have it splitted into two, code at the top and design at the bottom. CSS implementation is really easy too with dreamweaver.

I only ever used notepad, but I get the impression I did it the hard way. Previews as you type sounds deadly!

You can use notepad and save the page as an html file. Just open that file with a web browser. You'll find it easier to code HTML yourself. Despite what you might think, html isn't incredibly hard, and is a building block for PHP coding. I've found coding in HTML to be faster than using any text editor. The only reason I'd use one is to double check that I have the formatting right.

    Coding in notepad is fun.

XHTML is where things are going though.
    Oh and CSS with divs.

HTML is the starting point for anyone wanting to get into web design and coding. I started off in notepad.

Gone with Dreamweaver. Looks very user friendly, and it looks better than some of the programs I used before (AlleyCode, CoffeeCup)
    Thanks for the suggestions
