why? as Big B once put it so nicely - "Because you can" :D

how? There's a lot effort involved to make it reasonably safe - so consider the following guides: HWF sticky, NeoSeekers guide, For Intel CPUs, Athlon OC, and, man Google for more :D

benefits? Very much depends... very much. For example, take my case - I don't OC my CPU, cause I can gain only like 200MHz and there's no real benefit to that. But my video card can almost get 30% more to its performance, so I go OCing it...

Originally, overclocking was done to snag more performance out of the system. While that is done to some effect today, it's not always as potent due to the fact that the CPU is no longer the deciding factor in a PC's performance. Today it's more for the hell of it, fun, and/or because you can.

Edjis provided some good links to help in safe overclocking. Simply jacking up the voltage as high as you can go and cranking the FSB to the max usually doesn't work, at least very well, so overclocking does require some patience.

I use ATItool (contrary to what the name says, it's also workig for GeForces ;) ).

There are some instructions included with the program, but all of them say the same - increase the clocks by small bits and test the card for stability - run demanding games and analog stuff. Look for artefacts, crashes, anything unusual and adjust the clocks as needed.

    easy.
