I currently have a maxtor 6L080P0 80GB hard drive. Did not have any major problems with it until today. When I booted up the PC like I would on any given day it did not start up as after it verified the DMI pool it would not go to Vista load sequence and would just hang. At first I thought it was a malfunction in the boot sequence. So I inserted my Vista DVD to fix the problem. Unfortunately it did not manage to do anything as the Vista installation hangs after loading the setup files. To see if I could access the hard drive at all - I've tried it by using it as slave on this current PC which is running on XP. However when that hard drive is connected as slave, my XP does not load - it gives me a black screen after the WinXP loading screen. So I've inserted my winXP CD to see if I could repair the current boot sequence. However after pressing R to enter the repair menu of WinXP CD the system would hang on a blue screen with the scroll at the bottom reading Examining 78010 MB disk 0 at Id 1 on bus 0 on atapi. I've then tried to restart using safe mode in XP - after it installed several files - it froze yet again and did not boot up. I have some important data that I would need to recover and have pretty much run out of ideas as to what I can do to fix this. Any and all suggestions would be welcome! I just want to save my data from here and am not concerned about throwing it away after I've saved my files.
MAXTOR, theres your problem, the diamond max series are VERY unreliable with a fail rate of 70%, myself, I have had 4 die on me, in the last 2 years !!! Bought my very first seagate drive last december, using it A OK to this day, not one problem.
Seagate actuall took over maxtor in about 2k3 (i think) and just rebaged Seagate drive (stuck a lable saying Maxtor on their own Seagate drives if you change a master to a slave, the HDD will never boot unles you change the boot order in the BIOS how long did you leave it before you say it hangs, because i've never used vista but XP does appear to hang for quite a while at that point Edit: i'm not 100% sure about the date Edit: @rimmer, you must have being very unlucky & you probably bought old stock from wherever you bought them
Yea, I bought a 160GB from 2004, in a clearance on a website, an 80GB and a 200GB which I got off a friend, and my other friend's one, a 200GB one is on it's way out.
