    Hi there
All of a sudden the RED LED which represents hardisk usage stops blinking once it gets past the mother board display and etc (you know at the start where it says bla bla is slave drive and etc.) so even in dos it doesnt light up
    why would this be.

Well I can think of a couple of reasons:

    The LED is dying.
It only lights up when the disk is in use.
    It's wired up incorrectly.

LEDs don't just die. At least in my years of existence, I've never seen an LED just die. I've seen them cracked and broken, yes, but not just die like a filament light bulb. It is puzzling though, it could have something to do with your HDD setup, or where the LED is plugged into your motherboard. How many HDDs do you have?

Does it really matter though? It *is* only a little light.

Perhaps there is a faulty connection which is why it works sometimes?
