It is a small piece of software (or patch) that corrects a problem with an existing operating system. For example, whenever a security flaw is detected in Windows XP, Microsoft will release a hotfix which you install to cover up the flaw. Hotfixes can also iron out any bugs that may be found after the operating system as been released to the general public.
