Hey guys/gals, there's a chance I won't be stuck with dial-up forever! My Dad was talking to one of his friends at school and there was this wireless internet connection service near our area that might actually work for us! $30 a month for 30x the speed of dial-up is blessing. I'll actually be able to update CS:S, download my drivers and movies etc. if this works out. It's very possible that this could fall through though as there's a line of site determinant here. The towers on a small mountain several miles from our place in the boonies but if the tower doesn't have a clear shot to our house than it won't work or we'll get uber crappy connection speed and what not. But they install all the stuff for free to see if it works so it's a great deal. I'll keep you all posted for any futher developement:)
 
The company I currently work for uses a line of sight RF frame relay, which wouldn't be too different from what you're looking into. The technology is great, even has relatively low latency, assuming you have a clear view of the one-to-many tower. In fact, the only problem we've had with it is that our ISP uses W2k3 on their routers, which means we have a whopping 25% downtime for their server maintenance cycles (both planned and unplanned). Usually our connection is up and their routers are down. :( Hopefully the ISP in your area uses some type of *nix or Cisco router (which is BSD Unix). That being said, if we got the opportunity to switch to a hard network, we'd drop our wireless in a heartbeat.
 
Thanks dude, I'll keep that in mind when we change our ISP, our current one is awful as I mentioned in another thread.
 
I got an idea *evil smile*... You need 2 things, a few miles of cat5 cable, and a cheap laptop. Run the cat5 to a nearby wifi hotspot. then get the laptop with a wireless card. Turn the laptop into an internet gateway and steal internet...

Too bad the maximum length of a CAT5 patch is 328 feet.
 
Use a router. There was a magazine article I read somewhere on hacking a wireless connection by breaking the WEP encryption. Only takes a few hours sometimes.
 
Hey, just splice a few together;) Sure thing ninja, though I'll have to practice up before I bother with dying multiple times in rapid succession by your gun. Heck I don't even have the thing updated yet.

Yeah i in the UK and had 512kbps speed, then our isp randomly upgraded to 1.1mbps :D yaaaaay
altho now the computer downstairs (internet runs thru that into mine via network) doesnt like it being used, i can sit up here for hours on the internet as long as no-one uses the internet downstairs then it just cuts off, the technical help they gave us didnt work either...damnit, might just have to uninstall and re-install then...
