Ok. I hope this is the correct forum for this. I was currently running an older HP Pent III and never had any issues w/ my optical drives. (Sony CRX-300E & Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105). I've recently picked up a "newer" (still an oldy though) Gateway Pent. 4. It has an IntelD850GB Mo-bo,BIOS Vers:Intel GV85010A.15A.0017.P06.0012070815.(2)256mb Rambus and (2) 64mb Rambus memory chips, for a total of 640mb or RAM. I've tried both drives in both spots (Master/Slave). I've also tried moving the jumpers from Master/Slave to CS. Still to no avail they're not working the way they did in the older machine. Both of them reading cd-r/dvd-rom's way slower than before and burning slower as well. Pent 4 1.3ghz 640mb RAMBUS Mem.-(2)256mb & (2)64mb Primary IDE: WD80gb (Master HD) WD40gb (Slave HD) Secondary IDE: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105 (Master) SONY CRX 300E CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo (Slave) BIOS Vers:Intel GV85010A.15A.0017.P06.0012070815 Any help would be greatly appriciated....thanks in advance... My first port of call would be: 1. That you have the latest firmware. 2. That DMA is enabled both in BIOS and in Windows. If you are not sure about the secon, let 'us' know.
ok...as for the sony...i know i've got the most recent firmware. i hadn't messed w/ the PIONEER. As for DMA windows has my Primary IDE set on PIO for the Current transfer mode (DMA if available) and as for the Secondary IDE it's set to DMA if available and the Current Transfer Mode is Ultra DMA 2. I'll check the bois and get back to ya later...i'm off to work for the day... no more time to play.
Ok...decided to wait a few more min so....went into BIOS and my Secondary ID, has both Master and Slave set like this: Ultra DMA - Disabled
sorry for the double post, i just love gettin on a new board .....anyways PIO is disabled and Ultra DMA is disabled. It has Modes 0-4 should i disable PIO and if so what mode should i set the DMA to? Thanks a million
In all areas, DMA should be enabled as this allows better performance. I will not bore you with the details. First because I will not give you a good, informative answer, second, because all you really need to know is that DMA transfer yealds better performance. If you really want to understand the benefits of DMA over PIO, you best google for an answer......or maybe other forum dweller feels confident supplying an educational answer.... In BIOS enable DMA or set to Auto. Better off to start with Auto if you can. If performance does not improve, go back and set to DMA. In windows set all IDE channels to 'DMA if available'. Hope this helps...
DMA=Direct Memory Access. Without DMA enabled, the request has to go through the CPU, so this slows things down. Enabling DMA puts the CPU out of the direct picture so the reqired memory can be snagged as needed to do the job. As for the setting, if you're given a choice, set it to the highest number available
FLIPPIN SWEET Turns out what i needed to do was set both my Primary and Secondary IDE drives to "Auto" Thanks a million for the help Sabashuali, and Big B. http://db.etree.org/Pearhead Have a Grateful Day, Pearhead :ff:
