Im Building a computer for the first time soon. I plan on gaming and alot of people say to go with crt, but I kinda wanted a LCD. I am using a powercolor radeon x800 XL and i need a monitor with a DVI plug in. I need to know what makes a LCD monitor good and what makes a CRT monitor good. Any suggestions on particular products would be a tremendous help.

if you want to watch movies or play games good and want an LCD, theres three things that make an LCD suitable for you

I'd recommend 8ms timing or less or 12ms might be okay, but stick to 8 or less
Also the contrast ratio is important since it basically expresses colors better with rising numbers.
Refresh time is valuable too, higher numbers are better than I believe

Good LCDs cost quite a bit, where as CRTs just as good and better cost less than half the amount

A CRT monitor is virtually perfect with today's apps, high refresh, perfect response, and amazing contrast make CRTs much better than today's LCDs so far

If you want a CRT I'd recommend a G90fb by Viewsonic

If you'd want a good LCD, I'd reccomend a hyundai L90D+, I'd recommend a Samsung 915N too, but its only on analog, wait for further comments from other members too

another amazing LCD is the VP191B by viewsonic 8ms 800:1 CR

zRock pretty much summed up the story right there. The majority of LCDs are DVI ready, and there's always adaptors for a couple bucks a www.newegg.com if you need them. If space and great looks are not your primary focus then by all mean go with a nice CRT, preferably one with .21/20 dot pitch for an even better image.
For LCD's zRock is right look for low pixel responce times, there are 4ms monitors out now but you won't really notice the difference from 8, and even 12 is fine. 16ms is as high as you should go, it's not bad but some users still get ghosting on certain monitors. You want a brigher LCD too, 250 is as low as I'd go. 300 is what I'd aim at but it doesn't make a massive difference. Also when you see a LCD for $200 chances are it's realitivly cheesy, the specs may look pretty good but you simply have to check it out yourself when it's that low. Lastly look for things like dead pixel warrenty or that sort of thing, LCD's are infamous for shipping with dead pixels that can be extremely distracting. Companies that allow a refund or replacement for LCD's with more than x number of dead pixels are the ones to shoot for, lower numbers being better obviously.
