Upon powering the pc the monitor would turn itself off after 1 or 2 seconds, without displaying anything at all. I would wait another 10 or so seconds before being able to turn the monitor back on, only to shut itself off if the pc is still running. The fans and stuff would "run" with no beeps - just the monitor shutting off. I tried resetting cmos, using a 400 watt psu, used another piece of ram (in each socket as well), and connected only the bare essentials - hdd, cpu, psu, video card, monitor, ram - with the same problem. I tried another dell LCD monitor as well, and just got a new motherboard which didn't help. Of course, I've checked the connections, too. I tried pressing spacebar and stuff in case the monitor's in "sleep" mode and the caps lock key works. The weird thing is, a week ago I would keep trying and it would work, but not anymore. I'm suspecting it's my cpu - perhaps not able to relay info/data to the video card and monitor? I'll be able to test an old ASUS/AMD mobo/chipset this weekend to see if that will work with my components. Anyway, here's some details of mine in case it helps:

    cpu: Intel Pentium 4 2.66ghz 478 socket
    mobo: Gigabyte GA-8I848P(-G)
    memory: Corsair Value Select pc3200
    video card: EVGA Geforce 6800
PSU: Logic 350 watt (generic, but a new and heavier Sparkle 400 watt didn't work, too)
*Wouldn't think anything else would matter that would help fix this problem.

I'm gonna wait till tomorrow night or Sunday to try the old Asus/AMD mobo, but now I can't stop worrying about it. Anyone else have or had this problem? Is it really my cpu? :(

Well its not a problem with the monitor. So its either going to be the videocard/mobo or CPU since you already tried different RAM.

Sounds like a Graphics card failure to me.

Yeah, I'm definetly with Addis on this one. Except I am thinking more specifically the mobo/cpu. But you just got a new mobo, so that sounds out of the question. If you have a different cpu that you can try, it'd be helpful. I'd hate to see you blow money on one just to try it out. When you tried the other stick of RAM, you took out the first one, right? Just checking.
*edit* Take a look around the mobo a bit [especially around capacitors and the cpu], you just may find some scorch marks.. Not likely, but given your situation its worth a shot.

Yeah I tried using one stick of 512mb ram instead of the two, and used it in a different slot. Then I tried an older 256mb one - the speeds of the memory's are supported on the mobo.

So do you have the ability to try somone else's CPU in there? Yeah, I know it sounds like risky business... It's up to you. But if you're able to, it might help... Well, being able to swap parts out in general should help with determining a hardware issue.

Okay, this is just weird. I brought my comp back to SF and it worked with the Dell LCD monitor  Same components and everything, so my comp itself should be fine. Last time I tried it with this Dell monitor it didn't work as well - it stayed in standby mode indefinitely instead of turning itself off. But now it does!(?) Now I'm thinking my old CRT monitor that shuts itself down is somehow damaged. I'm gonna use this or another new monitor and see if the problem persists.
