I have 2 desk tops running XP sp2,1 network card in each connected to a linksys adsl gateway (wag54gs)(madasafish broadband).machines can ping themselves and unreliably each other. Both work fine on internet.when i try access between them I get following error message "\\**** not available you do not have permission to use network resources.Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not Found." **** is either the computer name or occasionally the workgroup name.Im confident machine names/workgroups ok,have enabled file sharing and shared 'C' on both machines
I have been trying to follow advice given in other threads but as soon as I designate IP addresses etc I cant connect to internet.I am an admin for both accounts on both machines. At present have norton firewall on 1 and bitprotecter on the other (disabling dosnt seem to make a difference) Have tryed a spare networkcard--same so not a hardware problem.Hate to be asking a question so similar to others but just dont know what to try.

I've also had this problem with windows file sharing, however to your point about the assigning IPs. Disabling DHCP on the computer and manually assigning IPs will prevent the computer from automatically finding DNS information so thatis why you are unable to access the internet. The connection may be fine but your browser can't translate the domain names to IP addresses.
