Hi, My computer broke and i have to buy a new motherboard. I however have some problems.I need a motherboard that will support DDRII ram, core 2 processors (I'm upgrading at xmas, currently have p4 3.0ghz) and also enough IDE controllers to boot windows. I have windows already loaded onto my old IDE harddrive, and I also have the windows cd, is this all I will need to get my computer up and running again and can I do it from a single IDE connector e.g. with one harddrive and one optical drive connected. Do i need a floppy connector? I'm looking at the Asus P5B, and actually looking to buy today so any help is much appreciated. Thanks
err hello no1s responded to this question and there's been 21 views, so im gonna continue wiv caution just incase its a joke hehe (hmm!!) you only really need one drive for an operating system (windows), a floppy isn't completetely necessary for a single hdd system but you will need to boot from the CD to set up windows prior to installation, if you need help with that giv me a shout. asus bios is easy to work wiv hope this helps and now im gonna go and do normal things nite nite
An single IDE channel (one connector on the motherboard) supports up to 2 devices. The P5B is pretty good, but there's some quirks with the BIOS, so if you get it, make sure to snag the latest BIOS and flash that. Another choice would be the Abit AB9, which is about the same price as the P5B, but seems to have a much more solid BIOS out the door. Unless you're changing motherboard with the same chipset, it's highly recommended that you do a clean install (format and install Windows).
