Hi Gurus/Experts and Friends. I am a newbie to hardware world and request you please direct me to the correct thread (if it is already there about Motherboards). I am trying to build a Desktop and would like to play with multi-processor (2 or more slots in the motherboard -correct me if I am wrong) & multicore (CPUs-like quadcore) to have a lot of Horse power. Any suggestions about what hardware to buy and the resources (like where to get good deals). Appreciate your time guys. Neo
To better fit which parts to choose, you'll want to have a couple of things: a specific function the PC will specialize in (i.e. gaming, video editing). This will give a better idea of what kind of budget you should look at. Typically, multiple processor socketed boards are aimed at workstations and severs, meaning the motherboard alone is going to start around $300. Additionally, you will need to purchase CPU's to fit these sockets. For example, I'm sure you know of Intel's Core 2 line, which is multi-core, but if you want make use of multiple processor chips, you must use the Xeon. In the case of AMD, you have the Athlon II and Phenom versus the Opteron. The desktop and sever processor parts are physically incompatible with each other, so what you want and what you can afford may lead you to stick with a single processor configuration at this point in time. Furthermore, with multi-core processors, unless you really do need something beyond 4-cores (which is used to say there are different CPUs on one single processor package), the additional configuration challenge isn't going to be there like it has been. The other downside is that, depending on your choice of OS, the additional CPU may not be taken advantage of. Last I knew, you'll need to use a Server variant of Windows if you wish to use more than 4 cores, which may not fit your wants or needs. Not to dash you're hopes, but before you jump in, just think some things through.
Lets say i want to upgrade my computer and will be using it mainly to browse the web, listen to music, run a lil file server with not much users, play (not too demanding) games, play poker, etc. all in the same time though. I want it to not be slow at any times and be sharp is it better to get a single cpu or x2 x3 x4 .. ? no idea really! what are the advantages of x3 x4 .. ?
