    Hey,

    CPU/MOBO SPECS: Core 2 duo e6600, D975Xbx

I'm having some problems with my new computer that i just built in december. I woke up on Friday to find that it had frozen in windows, no biggie i figured so i went to reset it but when i pressed the reset button nothing would happen, same with the power button. The only way to turn it off was to switch off my power supply at the back. After doing that i turned it back on and it would boot up fine but when it was loading windows XP it would lock up again. I figured it was just some drivers gone bad, it's not the first time thats happened to me so i decided to format it. Now when i try to reinstall windows it freezes at about 35 min while installing the hardware. I've disabled everything on my motherboard and i've tried swapping out my gfx card and it still freezes in the exact same spot. The only two things left that i haven't' turned off or swapped out are my processor and motherboard.

I've attached the two log files from the failed windows install. I'm not to sure what is going on in them, i've never really had to look at an install so hard before. It is worth mentioning that i've tried several windows CD's and a knoppix live CD as well. Oh and the setuperr file is empty. If there is anything else that you need to know then let me know and i'll fill you in.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'd check out the RAM with Memtest 86, which you can download for free to burn on a CD or an image for a floppy. You should not get any errors at all. For a thorough test, just boot off the disk/disc it's on and let it run 3-8 hours.

Now, if you do get errors, that doesn't necessarily mean the RAM is bad, but there could be some incorrect settings in BIOS.

The second thing I'd make sure of is that all power connectors on the motherboard are plugged in.

Also, would you list the specs of this box, including the brand and wattage and/or model of your power supply?

    Hey,

Thanks for your reply. After a long late frustrating night last night i finally got it up and working. I reset my BIOS(which i haven't been in for weeks). But i did let a mem test run the night before, it made 10 passes and came up error free when i woke up. All my connections were connected too, i double checked that. I still don't know what happened and how it got fixed exactly, thats going to bug me now.

    The CPU specs are

    Core 2 duo e6600
    intel D975Xbx motherboard
    2gb kingston hyper x 667
lol an old 80gb IDE while i wait for my raptor to get in.
    Antec Neo 550w power supply

If you've got any ideas on what the problem was toss em up cause i still can't figure it out. BU tit works so don't worry too much!

    Thanks

Hmm...odd. I know most of the problems I've had were due to me setting something in BIOS, forgetting about it, and it coming up as an issue later. My guess is that's probably what happened to you too, and clearing CMOS corrected it. Usually, it is the user, be it a seasoned guy like myself or a n00b.

Sometimes, a particular BIOS setting acts up when enabled, and it may be a bug in the BIOS code for that version.

I'd keep an eye on it, and check your event logs if you start having problems pop up again.

Yeah i don't have the slightest clue what caused it, i googled a whole bunch of stuff and nobody was having the same problem so i was thinking it would have to be my bios setting rather than the bios version. The Intel boards are from my experience a pain to OC but rock solid so i was quite surprised when this happened. But since then everything has been smooth sailing.

    Thanks for you help.
