MP3 Player, Not Recognized?

I'm having a weird problem. I got a new MP3 player for Christmas, and I've plugged it into the USB on several occasions (maybe three or four times) and successfuly switched the songs around to my liking, I do this usually once a week. Well, today I woke up and went to switch the songs. But I plug it in, and quite simply, nothing happens. Usually a dialog box will pop up asking me what I want to do, either play the files or view them. Nothing is coming up. I went to My Computer to check the "Devices with Removable Storage" area, but it's not even listed there. Any suggestions?

Connect the player and go to -

Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.

Try and look for it under USB or removable devices.
 
Hmm, there's lots of stuff under Universal Serial Bus controllers. (USB)

Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller

^^^ there's like five of those except with different number combinations.

USB Printing Support
USB Root Hub (also five of these)

..So I'm assuming it's not there.
 
No, I didn't see it anywhere. There really wasn't any other categories which it could fall under. This is weird. It was working fine only a few days ago.
 
Is there any program which you installed to "convers" with the player?
If you have try and uninstall it. Then see what happens if you connect the player again.

[ot]This is nasty as I am writing from my Linux installation so I am trying to imagine what I would try in Windows.... very hard....[/ot]

Anyway, As before, go to System and try - 'Add Hardware' and see if the computer detects anything.
 
Heh, well, thanks for all your help but it seems we are not getting anywhere. :x:

I didn't download any program with the MP3 player, I basically just took it out of the box and plugged it into the USB without any problems. I went to Add New Hardware and Windows could not detect anything. Weird..
 
Ask a silly question, are you using Windows XP?

The vast majority of MP3 players have huge problems being detected by any version of windows other than XP.
 
Heh, yeah. I'm using Windows XP.

I've had MP3 players before this one also. Worked without any issues. Someone suggested to me that it might be mal-functioning because of me disconnecting the USB from the PC before actually turning the MP3 player itself off first. But I find that hard to believe, because I've done that for the longest time. I don't know, it's weird..
 
Ok next question:

What's the brand of the MP3 player - maker, model.

Perhaps there is something on the manufacturers website that can be of use.

And was there a CD that came with it? Usually software is available, that picks up the device automatically.
 
Make is 'Diamond', if you don't recognize it, it's probably because it is a Canadian brand. I really don't know the Model, however.. I can try checking the website, I presume..

As for software, I was kind of confused when I opened the box. It's like this mini-disc. Nowhere near the size of an actual CD or DVD. What am I supposed to do with something like that? :confused:
 
You put it in the tray just like the normal ones.
I find it very strange as most MP3 players are essentialy a storage device which, in my experience, XP always recognised. Judging by my MP3 player package, the small disk contains no more than a firmware upgrade utility. Saying that it is always worth a check. Windows XP, "useless" as some might find it, will not stop recognising something just like that overnight for no reason. Try and remember if therte were any changes made to your system like a new program installed etc.
 
Does the player work in other computers?
Have you tried usning the player in other USB ports?
Also, if you have the driver disk for your motherboard, i'd suggest un-stalling the USB hubs and then reinstalling them.
 
Well, infront of my tower there are two USB ports, I've tried both. I'm thinking, though, that it's the MP3 player at fault. I am going to try it at my friends house to investigate this further.
