my dad doesent see how a 3500+ AMD 64 is better than my current processor, a 3.0ghz pentium 4, can you give me a details explanation on how a 3500+ is better than a 3.0ghz pentium 4 and every other pentium 4 currently out.

    A few things I know...
*More work per cycle, it may not be clocked at the same speed but that means very little, AMD's do more work per cycle that Intel CPU's and so don't need massive clock speeds.
*AMD's run cooler than your current CPU as P4 Prescotts are known to be a little 'warm' (bit of an understatement).
*64-Bit AMD Athlon's (new ones) are 64-Bit ready and therefore ready for future 64-Bit OS's and applications.
*AMD's out-do Intels in gaming, which is something you enjoy willhub therefore for a better gaming experience an AMD CPU would be better for you.

People add more to this and correct me if I'm wrong...

A Venice 3500 will have significantly lower heat output than equivelent P4s. They perform better in most tasks, and beat them to a pulp in gaming. They have an integrated memory controller, and take advantage of Hypertransport. The on die mem controller allows direct access to RAM, while usually the CPU has to communicate with the North bridge to put the data on the bus.

As Matt said, for your gaming needs, a new CPU like that would definately benefit, as well as a cooler system overall.

Select the AMD Athlon 64 from the Processor drop down mene and check out the 3500+ 939, apparently some model numbers only use 67W of power...others 89W, that's less than an Intel P4 3.0GHz isn't it?

    Just to mention:
AMD is better at gaming partly due to it's 3DNOW! instruction sets.
While Intel now has SSE3 instructions, that AMD 3500+ still has 3DNOW!, Intel MMX, SSE and SSE2 which means it can still almost beat the P4E at video encoding ect.....
    Go AMD :good:

Yeah I wish I had AMD
    *looks sad*
I might be able to snag a cheap CPU at a computer fair I'm going to tomorrow, If I can get one cheap then I'll buy a motherboard separately and join the AMD 'crew' heh...willhub check for computer fairs near you, then you can convince you Dad even more if you can find one cheap!
[ot] I like the little flags under people's mini-profiles at the side of their posts, if they have been there before I've never noticed them  [/ot]

On the contrary, 3dNOW is obsolete, being replaced by SSE. AMD Venice cores are Revision E, which means they also support SSE3, although the lengthy pipeline and high clock speeds of the pentium still help with video encoding.

thanks for all that guys, now i understand :D
hopefully i will get a 3500+, how much difference is there between the 3200+ and the 3500+, surely i could but a 3200+ and overclock it to even beat a 3500+?

    I stand corrected :)

willhub - just tell your dad that AMD's rule and that's that. That's all there is to it!
