My New Car

The original engine was a 1.6 8v, it now has a 1.8 16v bottom end - refurbished with a 2.0 litre head that has been polished and ported.

When i say ported and polished, this is just a summary of the work carried out by TSR Performance who stripped, rebuilt and tuned the bottom & top end.

Its been gas flowed and fitted with new phosphor bronze valves, bigger valves, new Karl Schmidt pistons, new oil seals, 40.5mm inlet valves, the head is a stage 5 TSR head, the bottom end is stage D.

The car was rolling roaded with @ 169bhp, it's also since had a new exhaust system & 4-2-1 supersprint manifold & cold air feed added.

Please check TSR Performances website to check.. as it is a 2.1 litre (hydraulic conversion).
 
Baring in mind that it also weighs around 850KG - and BHP is measured per tonne. - thats 169BHP at the wheels. alot more at the fly wheel :D
 
Cool bunny. I have an 87 scirocco that I have had for close to ten years, it was actually my first car. The Mk1 cars are great, my scirocco is the 2nd heaviest of the mk1's next to the cabrio and even then its under 2180 lbs (thats about the same as the Lotus Elise).
 
Will any of the Corrado engines fit in the old Golfs? Its pretty well the same chassis innit? The VR6 or G60 engine would make you go round the lanes faster :)

169bhp at the wheels is not bad going at all.... did you get a power curve chart off the dyno?


Ive just found out the corrado was based on the mark II (a2 platform) so maybe the engines wont fit... maybe they will. A 2.9 VR6 would get the chassis rolling :)
 
Yeah, it will fit... It wont just drop in and go. The a2 chassis cars jetta/golf were either a cis fuel injection 8v, cis 16v 1.8l and cis montronic setup (much better) that ran only the 2.0 liter 16v. These will not run the vr6 and if you already have the 16v its not worth swapping over to the problematic g60 engine which is much pricier and you will lose your top end.

The vr6 swaps are relatively easy to do and can be a weekend swap if you have a friend that has done this before and you have all the right parts. You are going to need the subframe and the engine for starters. If its high mileage there is an internal timing chain that should be replaced before you stuff it in. You are also going to want to do the brakes and well as get the correct drive axles. When that is all said and done you are going to need to address the suspension. You will have alot of extra weight which means its going to be harder to brake and your going to nosedive if you dont have a strong enough spring to fight back.

If you are looking to do this setup I would go test drive a mk3 gti with a vr6 motor. That might be enough for you. If not then I would then go find a nice mk2 gti with a 16v motor to drive. Gotta make sure you like the car before you go and do a motor swap. You might be satisified with the old 16v too. If everything points you in the direction of a swapped mk2 then check out vwvortex.com and go to forums. It can be a vast tool for info. I have a owned a vr6 passat, it wasnt the end all vw engine and my 1.8 turbo audi would smoke my old car. Even with the extra drivetrain weight of the AWD. the mk2 vr swaps are fun though!
 
Oh man completely didn't notice, its right drive, (obvious for you, but sweet in the states) Anyways, did you guy it with those wheels, or did you get em. Seriously, can't wait till it gets warm and i can start working on my truck.

ages ago when i had my first dub i was readin some mag where it featured on the front cover a MK1 golf with porsche engine dropped in. accordin to its owner it wheel spinned in third gear! no doubt fast, but i would be slightly concerned for my life having so much power in such a small car..
 
Like the Metro 6R4? :) That car just seems silly.... a bit like the Pikes Peak Suzuki Escudo. Imagine that on the road. :)
