I decided to try out VectorLinux on the Compaq I found in the skip!

I managed to battle my way through the installer and get to the XFce desktop. Unfortunately, some things aren't working the way they should!

The desktop is currently being displayed in 640X480 @ 16-BIT. I wan't to change this to 1024-748 @ 16-BIT but I can't seem to do it! I've rebooted the computer into a terminal and run VASM, but it doesn't seem to save my configuration!

My second problem is configuring the sound card. It was detected originally, but now it refuses to be detected. It runs on an onboard ISA bus, and I don't think it's PnP.

The third problem has to do with the CD-ROM drive. It was detected and install with the OS, but whenever I try to access it, I get an error message that says something like 'Wrong fs type... ..... .... ... ...'.

And finally, my fourth problem is that VectorLinux is not detecting my USB Flash drive!

    My computer is a:

    Compaq Presario 2240
    Intel Pentium 233MMX
    48MB PC66 SDRAM
    S3 TRIO 64/v2 (2MB) On-Board Graphics Adaptor
    ESS 1880 Onboard Audio Adaptor
    Generic Sanyo CD-ROM

As you can see, this is a very old computer!

There are quite a few issues here, so can we tackle the video card first? How should I go about making sure it's detected and installed properly, and then changing the resolution?

I uninstalled VectorLinux and installed Zenwalk instead. Unfortunately, it has similar problems! I managed to fix the resolution though, by going into the terminal and loading xorgconfig.

Unfortunately, Zenwalk with Xfce is too much for the little old Compaq! Everything is far too slow. It took about 3 mins just to load FireFox!

It's probably best that I reinstall Windows 98SE on that particular computer.
I've learned a few things a long the way, so this wasn't a complete waste of time. I never knew about xorgconf until now :)
