I thought I'd done all my homework. I check the reviews. I went to the store and finally I got the NEC 1770GX monitor (on request for Christmas). The monitor was purchased for a combination of office related work as well as occasional gaming. This thing IS really, really nice overall. No dead pixels, nice and sharp, etc... it even looks nice when it's off. BUT, I never really understood the level of reflectivity inherent with the Opticlear coating. When I was in the store I check it out while it was working and it seemed really nice and I didn't notice much in the way of glare, probably due to a combination of location, lighting and the fact that it was displaying a moving background of all colors (no blacks as I recall). But now that it's home I can see first hand that it reflects everything like a mirror; especially when displaying black. So far I'm finding this to be a real nuisance and I haven't really spent much time with it yet. I'm wondering if others have found this to be a problem and, if they did, whether or not you stuck with it and eventually got used to it or did you find a workable solution or did you get rid of it and try something else. Right now I'm seriously considering taking a hit on the restocking fee and trading to the ViewSonic VP730b (which comes with an antiglare screen). Any thoughts? Tom
The whole point of the Opticlear and related technologies is to protect the screen from damage and sun damage and supposedly to give better overall sharpness to the image, but as you mentioned, the major downside is the glare. I've had friends that have glary screens who simply put up some dark curtains and lived with it. Try to get it in the perfect position in your room or wherever it's setup. I've also heard that you can buy some Anti-Glare screen cleaner which will apply a thin layer of chemicals to reduce the glare, although i've not seen it at all, yet. NEC make excellent screens, so if you can live with it, i'd keep it over the Viewsonic
