    I have a P4 2.4

    This is my problem

I turn on my PC and the monitor just wont respond, it is like its on standby mode. I dont know what the problem can be, I know the PC works, becuase one time, the monitor responded and the computer was working fine. Then my PC got stuck so I turn it off from the back, and now again the monitor wont respond.

whats the problem, is it the monitor ? the monitor cable ? video card ? maybe something else ?

Please help if you can. Thanks

Okay could be a number of things, full PC specs please (would help us a lot)
Could be a bad Graphics Card...Faulty RAM, overheating there's lots of possibilities...
Have you tried another known working monitor? Graphics Card? RAM? etc...
let us know what you've tried so we can rule out some possibilities and hopefully make problem solving quicker
Barebones is another way to start problem solving but this is only for when you have no idea what is wrong, try this later on if you still can't solve the problem after our help.
See this thread to learn about how to start off in 'Barebones' to help solve the problem.

Try clearing the CMOS, its a jumper on your motherboard which you short out to reset the settings.

Or alternatively you can take out the battery and reinsert although you will have to reset the date.

Well I have about a 2 yr old dell. It is a P4 2.4. 1GB Ram. 120GB HD. Nvidia 64mb Video Card. I have a 17 inch lcd monitor. Win XP Home edition. So far I have not tried anything. The only thing I know once the monitor responded and the PC worked well for like 2-3 days, it gets stuck I turn the PC off from the back and then when I turned it on, the monitor once again did not respond. I have a laptop, is there anyway, I can connect the desktop with the laptop and see if that responds ? Thanks for all your help guys. Oh and Matt555 I PMed you please respond. Thanks

Ok interesting development. I just plugged in the monitor cable to my laptop and the other end to the monitor. The monitor now responds. It shows what the laptop shows, so this means the monitor is not broken, and the cable is also fine. So there is a problem with the actual PC. I spoke to a buddy of mine he thinks it might be the power supply. So what now, is it the video card? How do I reset CMOS

right to clear your CMOS there should be a 'jumper' somewhere on your motherboard, the manual (if you have one for your motherboard) should tell you where this is, if not then take out the battery on your motherboard and leave out for about 10mins, then put it back in and it should be alright, like Addis said you will then need to reset time
If the monitor worked on something else then it's not the monitor, could be your BIOS and being a dell it could quite possibly be your PSU, try what Addis suggested (clearing CMOS) and get back to us to let us know what happens.
