I am building a computer to be used as a digital audio workstation so mainly I need a good processor and great read/write times for a audio drive as well as something that is not going to be that loud... i am slightly interested in overclocking the system but not enough to sacrifice some hd's or ammount of ram due to cost... my budget is around 1000$ and I own some of the items on this list already just wondering if i missed something or am overlooking something big. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ SD Core ZALMAN CNPS7000B-Cu LED 2 Ball Blue LED Light Cooling Fan MSI neo2 plat Rosewill 550watt PSU CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB VS2GBKIT400C3 NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A 2 X SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series 120GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 HD in raid0 (entirely setup for recording and play back of audio data) SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series 80GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 HD Lian LI PC65B case not entirely sure about the video card yet, not looking for much just enough to hold the screen data and run two monitors without much overhead I own a raedon 9650 and might grab that and pick up a new video card for my gaming/internet PC the neo2 platnium/Lian LI case/PSU i already own and need I need to keep the neo2 due to compatibility issues with my sound cards/DSP cards(fw1884, Powercore Element, Powercore PCI MK2) thanks -c
that should be a sweet system, i dont know much about Samsung HDD's but id maybe go for Western Digital or Seagate HDD's. That 9650 will be enough to hold screen data for sure.
Everything is great except that Rosewill doesn't have the highest quality standards around, that's why it's so cheap. Brands like seasonic, Antec, and Thermaltake make better psus, you don't need that high a wattage rating anyway. The 9650 will be fine if you don't game of do digital editing/creation work with graphics.
I would definately use a different PSU. rosewill tends to be on the, shall we say, "budget end". Investing in a $100 PSU will be well worth the money, even if you take it out of other components.
the reason i am going with the samsungs was due to the noise factor(i occasionally record things in the same room as my computer so its hard to have loud components, they appeared to be on the quieter side and toms hardware guide gave the series a good review... i would have bought a sonata case, but i would not be able to deal with having a door on the front of my case...
i had bought the psu over the weekend and wound up mounting it.. i just had a cheap psu(emachines cheap) burn a whole through my second to last mainboard this year so i know what can happen from cheap componants... is this psu that bad? wattage wise i was looking for some headroom, videocard/2 DSP cards/(possibly)4 gb of ram/3 hds/dvd burner/1firewire device(possibly a second within a year)/2 usb devices? sorry for the noobish questions here, just want to make sure my money is well spent also this specific model i found very very positive reviews on newegg(or does that really not mean anything in reality?)
That Rosewill PSU should be fine, and its got plenty of clean power (34Amp +12v Rails) thats pretty powerful. You can still consider getting an Antec or Enermax PSU for peanuts more!
Maybe Rosewill got it right with this one but it is known for the budget end of the product line so for maybe $20 more or so you can get a big brand name psu that will have little chance of burning out and taking your system with it.
low on ram for ocing speedwise? or sizewise? and yes... however that link is a corporation that I am a part of...
